Animate a character from captured motion

Make a character’s parts follow motion taken from a video or a file.

5 min
01

Draw the character as separate vector parts (head, torso, arms, legs) on a visible, unlocked layer. Each part must be whole, with its fill and outline.

02

Get a motion capture: in Animation → Extract motion from video…, pick a video of a person moving and save the result, or open a ready-made JSON capture with the panel’s folder button.

03

Select all the character’s parts with V and open Animation → Animate character…. Click Use current selection. The panel suggests joints from where the parts sit.

04

Review the joints by dragging the points over the character. To link a part to a different bone, click the part, then click the bone that should drive it.

05

With a capture loaded, click Prepare animation. The Play preview and Apply animation buttons stay disabled until it is prepared; the panel tells you which step is missing.

06

Play the preview. If you like it, click Apply animation to a new layer: the original layer is kept, hidden, and Ctrl+Z undoes everything.
